In the short story Goophered Grapevine, written by Charles W. Chestnutt, the author tells a story of a married couple in the 1800’s. Due to the wife becoming ill, their family doctor advised them to move to an area with a different climate. They decided to visit North Carolina to see if it would be a good fit for them and if the area would be suitable for his growing grape business. Upon arriving to the plantation, the couple ran into a “colored” man nearby, feasting on grapes. Once they introduced and acquainted themselves with one another, the husband asked the man for his honest opinion of whether or not the land would be a good purchase to make. The man said no, and told them that a witch had cursed the land many years ago. When asked to elaborate, the man then elaborated on the history behind the land that they were speaking of.

The author then speculates whether or not the story of the hex was true, or if the man just did not want them to purchase the land. This added a bit of comedic relief to the story, but also makes the reader wonder about the authenticity of this tale. This story was a great example of stories being passed on for generations, even though it may not be one hundred percent factual and real, it’s still entertaining none the
