When people look back at August 10th 2015, they may choose to look at it as the day that the world of new media changed. Google, who already stood as one of the biggest companies on the planet, decide to shake the global foundations of business when they announced the arrival of Alphabet. While the name has perplexed many, the move itself may prove to be a stroke of genius. What Alphabet represents is the creation of an umbrella company that the Google brand will operate under. Replacing Google Inc. as Google and Google sub-brands holding company, it is considered to be a mammoth move from one of silicon valleys major players. With Alphabet acting as the canopy that all other related brands will fall under, many are asking the question of what the future will mean for Google now it is designated as an independent entity. The first big change for Google is the removal of popular CEO Larry Page. The man who has led Google to the promise land will now be moving onto a more senior role within Alphabet. In his place will come Sundar Pichai, a former Google product chief that will take the role and allow Page to move onto to work on Google’s ambitious ‘moonshot projects’. During August 2015 Google announced plans to launch a brand new umbrella company called Alphabet. But what is Alphabet? What is in the creation of a new umbrella company? Well the following are the top 5 reasons as to why Google as decided to implement an umbrella business structure.
Reason 1 – Sending a Message to Google Shareholders
To many Google has been an exposed brand from a stock market perspective, something that has clearly worried founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Through the creation of Alphabet, the pair are now shielded from shareholders and it gives them the freedom to create other ventures, without prying shareholders looking in. These companies can then operate without dividend, buyback, stock price, and value creation in mind. Google can now allow such companies to evolve and grow naturally, sending a message to Google shareholders in the process.
