SWOT ANALYSIS Goodwill Secondary School

The SWOT analysis is a strategic planning method often used to highlight and identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in any organization. It is particularly helpful in identifying areas for development (Morrison, 2010). The SWOT analysis conducted at the Goodwill Secondary School will focus on Academic Excellency, problems that hinder student achievement and recommendations for greater success of students. The analysis will be conducted based on a strategic School Improvement Plan and real experience obtained from the Researcher.

Strengths at the Goodwill Secondary School include the presence of highly trained and qualified teachers. All teachers at the school are teacher trained from the Teacher Training College on the island. Additionally, many are graduates from the University of the West Indies (UWI). Those who are not graduates are currently at UWI attaining their degrees. The school has a relatively small student population as compared to other Government run schools locally. The school offers a variety of curriculum with appropriate rigor geared to prepare students for future challenge and opportunities. To encourage students succeed, Goodwill secondary School has established academic recognitions such as principal’s awards, honor roles and merit systems which encourage them to take pride in academic excellence. The school also has a strong sports program with prizes and awards for those who excel. This helps to develop well rounded students for the future. There are presently two counselors at the school along with a strong peer counseling program to assist students with personal issues. Many of the students the school receives enter with weak academic ability and also come from poorer communities. Because of this the school has had a reputation of bad external exam results and also high incidence of fights among students. The classrooms are ill-equipped. The school does not have the necessary resources to cope with the changing technological advancements taking place in the world today. Of major concern is the very poor internet service at the school. The building was built since the sixties and is presently dilapidated since there has not been any major repairs done since it was built. There is a high rate of absenteeism by teachers; many teachers are at the University of the West Indies (UWI) and they miss a lot of school through illness from study stress or also during UWI exams or assignment
