Goodlad's Analysis

Decent Essays
From the text, I take the question "what educational purposes should the class seek to attain?" and merge it with Goodlad's operationalization of access to knowledge "include rather than exclude students from the educational process". Taking those two individual thoughts and sitting down with each class, we tailor my curriculum together as a class. This means we hit all the standard objectives I want to cover, but will allow students input on how much time is spent on each unit to satisfy their goals. This also helps provide students with "essential skills for learning" stated by Goodlad because they have buy-in on the process. By answering the initial question as a class, I put a bit of the power in their student's hands and show, firsthand,

Assignment 4 In Jean Anyon ’s essay “From Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work,” she focuses on many schools whose curriculum have been carved out by social class. The lower the students families social class is the more repetitive and simple their curriculum will be, while on the other hand, the higher the social class is the more thought goes into the students coursework. Anyons basic point is that the work children are told and expected to do in school is the work that they will continue to do in their future jobs and careers. People, most often, do what they are taught to do.…

Midterm Exam – The Child and the Curriculum John Dewey’s The Child and the Curriculum, written over a century ago, poses a question that can still prove relevant to teachers in this day and age. His primary question that he attempts to tackle in his paper, is simple: should education be tailored to a child’s specific needs, or to a set curriculum? Throughout the paper, he argues that the tug of war between child and curriculum is ultimately futile; choosing one over the other will still prove detrimental. Ultimately, Dewey says “all depends upon the activity which the mind itself undergoes in responding to what is presented from without” (Dewey, 1906, p.39). In other words, Dewey believes that experience is the key to learning, and the ideal curriculum should focus on…

A backbone built on honor, code, and loyalty defines the “chain-of-command” mentality that associates with the military’s public persona. No clearer is this than in Rob Reiner’s A Few Good Men, bringing the judgement line of a military order and a gradually rationalized act of unethical action to the forefront. Commentary considered by Phillip Zimbardo’s “The Stanford Experiment” and Herbert C. Kelman and V. Lee Hamilton…

The funds of knowledge are an asset that teachers can use to expand the knowledge of the student they have. According to funds of knowledge for scholars “Funds of knowledge is a familiar phase to almost any teacher of culturally and/ or linguistic diverse students” (David, pg.3). This statement is a powerful one since teacher and students share their knowledge through their culture and diversity variety. A teacher when is only in the classroom environment only he or she does not learn as much from students as when home visits are made. Home visits should not be only made when students are not behaving in class or have issues.…

The Plan of Salvation is intended to improve God’s children, and allow them to return to live with Him again. In order to do that, however, tests and instruction must be given. This mortal life is an opportunity of immense spiritual and intellectual growth. That growth comes naturally for some, and less naturally for others. Thankfully, our Heavenly Father has given instructions through His servants and the scriptures as to how we can increase this knowledge.…

    A. Room set-up Criterion 1: “Democratic schools value collaboration and cooperation rather than competition”. (Pugach, 2009, p. 309) Discussion: Mrs. C does not meet this criterion since, although the desks in her classroom are arranged into pairs, some students sit alone. While every other student is sitting down next to a classmate they can interact and collaborate with, there are three students who sit by themselves. One student is not separated completely from the rest, but he does not have a classmate next to him that he can collaborate with.…

An element of Dabrowski’s Theory is overexcitabilities. This element is all too often evident with gifted learners. Overexcitabilities are reactions to stimuli within the environment and often come across as extreme emotions of joys or sorrows. “Individuals who are endowed with overexcitability perceive reality in a different, more intense, multifaceted manner” (Mendaglio, 2008, p. 24). For these students, life is experiences more intensely, especially in the areas of intellect, emotion, and imagination.…

The concept of education is how to learn, understand material, and knowledge that is taken in. Through education certain values and beliefs are developed. These beliefs, habits, and skills shape a student’s character. There are two controlling factors that come into play when discussing the concept of education; one is the teacher and the other is the student. As illustrated in Richard Feynman’s article, “O Americano Outra Vez,” a student’s learning focus is overwhelmingly influenced by the teaching style they are subject too.…

This practice causes the emphasis to fall away from math and science, and move towards the humanities. The purpose of self-study is to urge students to develop self-awareness and responsibility (Malik & Akhter, 2013, p.89). A teacher tests student’s knowledge through subjective appraisals (Magrini, 2013), while an essentialist teacher uses traditional exams to test his/her student’s knowledge. Science and math are the emphases of an essentialist curriculum, though reading, English, and history are not to be ignored. The teacher leads all learning, with all students participating in one large lesson (Parkay & Hess, 2000).…
