Good Writing Definition

I’ve spent the day thinking to myself “what is good writing”? Admittingly, I struggled initially to write a paragraph on this. After gathering up my thoughts and the notes I have been making on my smartphone throughout the day, this is what I have come up with. I believe good writing starts with a subject that people want to read, a sort of “know your audience” if you will. Good writing should have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Spelling and grammatical errors should be avoided, its likely most well written pieces have been reviewed prior to submitting a final copy. Punctuation is also an important tool, a well-placed or omitted comma can totally change a sentence. Though I don’t believe that good writing requires original ideas, I do

The nonfiction book On Writing Well by William Zinsser is about nothing more than what the title itself implies it to be. The book is divided into four parts: “principles,” “methods,” “forms,” and “attitudes.” The first part is about how to write with simplicity so that the reader will understand by removing unnecessary words and putting the right ones with the right meaning for what is trying to be said. Overall, doing so without having to completely take away the parts that give style to our writing. In chapter one of “The Curious Writer” by Bruce Ballenger, I felt that the chapter was heavily impacted on how to write a well written essay in many forms. I believe that in the beginning of the chapter the author was stating that the two reasons for a person is interaction and critical thinking. I agree with the author because I feel that these are key elements that are extremely essential in a well developed essay that usually I tend to forget to put in when I am whether it's a timed essay, research paper, argumentative paper or response to literature. I really appreciate author explaining the “do’s and don'ts” of writing a paper. For example, in my experience I usually hold my opinions back when I am writing papers opinions…

According to a study done by Achieve Inc. in 2005, fifty percent of students that graduate high school are not prepared for college-level writing (Santrock, 2011, 370). While this lack of preparedness roots all the way back to the beginning of learning how to write, a great deal of knowledge about becoming a better writer can be learned in high school English classes if the teachers apply different writing techniques. In chapter eleven of John Santrock’s textbook Educational Psychology and Sharon Zumbrunn and Keegan Krause’s article “Conversations with Leaders: Principles of Effective Writing Instruction” many best practices for teaching writing are given in hopes to provide teachers with numerous ways to teach their students to become better…

I believe peer review might just be one of the greatest tools for good writing. Peer review not only helps the author correct his mistakes like vocabulary and sentence structure, but helps the writer learn from them. Many times it will teach us to check for those same mistakes the next time we write. Many writing teachers always tell us to read our papers out loud, and even though we try to, sometimes we're just reading what is prerecorded in our brains. Sometimes we've thought about it so much that we are not seeing the actual words we are putting down on the paper but what is our minds told us we meant to write.…

I feel that writing is a good subject to be familiar and practicing in frequently, it is a necessary tool to communicate properly. Although, if I were to be truthful I’d have to say that I am not the biggest fan of it due to the fact that it bores me and I have trouble figuring out what to say. So I find it hard to enjoy writing because most of the time I am just struggling to concentrate because I don’t have much more to say about a topic. Recently, since I have not been in school for a while, I have found myself forgetting rules to the English language in my everyday speech so I find it to be useful. This has influenced how I feel about writing because the more I write, the more easily I can remember to use these rules in my daily…

I understand the importance of proof reading, researching, editing and composing my writing to create a higher quality than before I commenced this course. Effective writing is being aware of the value of taking an audience into consideration, as a writer I have learnt the importance of staying on target with your chosen audience. I found once I became personally motivated to write and pushed all doubts aside the words began to flow onto the paper. “Whatever the teaching, the writers are on their own, drawing on their experience of life, of language and of story to make meaning. I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…
