Good Vs. Evil

Decent Essays
Human nature means distinguishing characteristics, such as thinking, feeling, and acting. Knowing that human nature is that I believe that human nature is both “good” and “evil”. I do not think that human nature is one or the other, “good” and “evil” make up both of them. People do things that are “evil” but they think what they are doing is “good”. Something that comes into my mind when I think about something like this is 9/11. The reason that 9/11 comes into my mind is because Bin Laden was doing something evil and he had all of those followers working for him. These followers believed they were doing something “good” for god but in reality they were doing something evil. When I was reading Plato’s Gorgias I believe that Plato thinks

The Problem with the Problem of Evil There are several arguments today that reason the impossible existence of God-or a “good” God for that matter. One in particular, “the problem of evil”, greatly supports such claims. It rationalizes that God would never allow evil to flourish based on three specific attributes of Him being omnipotent, omniscient, and just. Essentially, the problem of evil argues that there should be no evil if God is aware of it, has the capability to end it, and the desire to do so. Therefore, He cannot exist.…

The line between what's good and what's evil seems a simple idea in itself, just a line dividing the two, right? However, what you don't think about are the footnotes that cross and cover the line with justifications and designated loopholes made by those who believe certain things must be accounted for when considering what is actually right and wrong. Supposing that Batman were on a side, he'd be one of those sticky notes teetering on the line that divides what he believes in, and what he is capable of. Page 149 revels in the fact that Batman and the Joker have found their opportunity to offer their final blows, Batman grasps at the Joker's head and is prepared to twist and turn, or press his fingers into his eye sockets. Hick's claims that through making virtuous choices, we will become more closely related to God and that humans are given this power through our free will. Hick further explains the need for evil to develop our souls. The evil we experience in the world allows us to suffer and therefore, allows us to develop a sense of what is right and wrong. With this knowledge, our souls develop more closely in the "likeness of God." I do agree with Hick in certain aspects of soul making.…

Atheists say that a God who is all-powerful, all-knowing and perfectly good shouldn’t allow evil in the world. Why should there be evil is created all that we know? After God flooded the world and this is where we learn of the story of Noah and Ark, God said that He wouldn’t interfere with the affairs of humans because that is why He flooded the earth on the first place. Evil was gaining too much of a foothold in the hearts of humans. God loves us and because it hurt Him so much to have killed the evil in humanities hearts that He would never again flood the earth or to interfere.…

    Evil For Greater Good

As a whole the concept of doing evil for the eventual greater good is a romantic one, however it is riddled with moral ambiguities and broad generalizations. Firstly, the question of how immoral actions can be justified initially with no evidence that any greater good will come of it in future. There is no reasonable way of predicting ‘the ends’ therefore they can never truly justify the means. When you have no way of predicting whether good or bad will come from your action you cannot be certain of anything in future other than the immorality of the present. An analogy would be the following: You have a dog who is very ill.…

Theodicy is a term which describes the problem with evil in the world and begs the question, if an all-knowing, all-powerful God exists, why does he allow evil to persist among his followers? This paper will seek to examine the relationship between good and evil and attempt to provide some explanation as to how evil continues to exist in a world in which God is a part of so many peoples’ lives. An argument will be made that evil thrives in modern society not because of any action that God fails to take, but rather because of the fact that God has given us the freedom to choose our own paths and accept the consequences of our actions. Ultimately, those who choose to live good lives will be rewarded, while those who allow evil to consume them will be forced to accept their fate when the time comes. A DISCUSSION ON…

    Good And Evil Essay

The discussion about good and evil in relation to capital punishment was particularly striking to me, because I did not before this course think about the perception of good and evil in relation to the Christian, Judaism, and Islam traditions. I had a one-dimensional view of good and evil, because of my Christian background and these different approaches made me think more critically about the nature of good and evil. For example, in Christianity the fall from good to evil is because of Adam and Eve’s original sin. Original sin is transmitted to the rest of humanity going forward so evil is a persisting reality. Sin is present and continues in human life.…
