The character that is driving force of this novel is Cathy Ames. She is an antagonist because she has a very deceptive and superstitious personality. Cathy is an only child, has blonde hair, hazel eyes with droopy eyelids which make her seem sleepy, and is always very slender and delicate. evil, as it was in the tale of Cain and Abel. Charles represents Cain, Adam represents Abel, Cathy represents the devil, and when the twins, Cal and Aaron, are born they take the place of Cain and Abel. Throughout the story this theme is shown through Cathy’s consistency of deceptive motives and Charles’ envy of Adam throughout certain events such as when he beats Adam up because their father had liked Adam’s present of a puppy more than Charles’ blade when they are kids. Charles was infuriated and told Adam, “I took six bits and I bought him a knife made in Germany-three blades and a corkscrew, pearl-handed...What did he do with it? ‘Thanks,’ he said, like that. And that’s the last I heard of…(pg. 26).” This connects to everyday life because where there is darkness there is light, and of course, there can be no light without darkness. In a way, this shows that despite issues anyone may face in life, there will always be something amazing waiting on the other end, always staying as a balance of life. Other works that have a similar theme are The Harry Potter series and The Hunger Games
