He likes Cathy, but constantly has people telling him she is no good. He is attached to a source of evil, even though his intentions are good. Charles and Adam have many situations that mirror the idea of good versus evil. Their relationship as well as the mystery of their father lingers in their minds. Charles and Adam have always had a rocky relationship. When they were little, Charles attempted to kill Adam because of jealousy. This can relate to the story of Cain and Abel in the Bible. Cain gets banished to east of Eden and Charles’ situation is similar. He will not leave the farm and is almost trapped there. Their father dies and leaves them an enormous sum of money, which leads them to question how he received it. This situation is good, because they will have money for many years. However, with every good there is a source of evil. The brothers can’t comprehend how their father got the money, which leads them to think he must have stolen it or got it in an unlawful way. “They left the question lying there, walked mentally around it, stepped over it. Their words ignored it but their minds never left it” (65). Adam believes that they should not worry about the situation, because they have money. Charles on the other hand, wants to check papers and see how Cyrus got the money. Others may say that the Bible has no sort of influence on the novel. However, without good and evil, the characters would not have conflict. Many characters take inspiration from the Bible. For example, the brothers Cain and Abel and Charles and Adam share the same first letter in their name. Charles and Adam’s fight when they were young, is reminiscent of Cain and Abel’s disagreement.
East of Eden is a novel where the concept of good versus evil is heavily relied on, which assists in creating the plot in the story. Without it, characters, storylines, and major conflicts would not exist. Similarly, inspiration from the Bible helps create the plot in the story. By mirroring similar events that happen in East of Eden and the Bible alike, readers can draw connections between the two books and recognize similar plot
