Good Vs Evil In Beowulf

J. R. R. Tolkien presumed the theme of Beowulf deals with a “man alien in a hostile world, engaged in a struggle which he cannot win.” Beowulf is the individual that carried out this theme. Beowulf is an “alien” to the battlefield and does not perceive that conquering one monster does not destroy all evil.
Beowulf is an “alien” to the battlefield because he is of noble birth. Usually when a man or women is of the noble family, they are secured and never have to fight in battles or do any of the other obligations of men and women not of noble birth. Due to this conflict, he must first learn how to fight and assist his warriors and the people of Denmark. Not knowing what Grendel is capable of, Beowulf ventures to Denmark to see the destruction this monster has caused and there he gains the knowledge he needs to succeed in the battle with Grendel.

Soon Grendel’s mother makes herself known to the people of Denmark. Beowulf must now fight a new battle with a beast he has seen before. Beowulf must journey to her underwater cavern to fight her. He murders her with a enormous sword and discovers Grendel’s limp body. As a reward from all evil, or so he thinks, he slashes off Grendel’s head and takes it back to Hrothgar. Hrothgar rewards Beowulf for his bravery and strength in battle. Him and his remaining warriors head back Geatland. Many years later, the Geats crown Beowulf as their king. Just as Beowulf thinks peace is in his kingdom, a dragon starts reaping havoc throughout Geatland. With the aid of Wiglaf, Beowulf demolishes the dragon, but dies shortly after the
