The Narrowful Death Of My Grandfather-Personal Narrative

I challenge you to stop for a second and think about what it means whenever they say “good things never last for very long.” Do you truly know what it feels like to lose someone that means you everything to you, especially someone who you idolize? Well, if you have, then I assume that you would understand why I shed tears whenever I recount the wonderful memories of the undying moments my grandfather and I shared together. I never fully understood the meaning of those six words “good things never last for very long” until 8 years ago when I had to cope with the sorrowful death of my last surviving grandfather, Egbert Thorpe, whose life got taken away by a defiant lung cancer. Somehow, I believed that his life could have been spared, but I …show more content…
A tightly knitted bond between my grandfather and I subsequently ensued, which spiraled into a lifelong stream of experiences and refreshing memories. It feels like it was not that long ago, when I was only 9 years, just started 4th grade in middle school. I remembered when grandpa threw my little underweight body into the driver’s seat of the monstrous size Massey Ferguson tractor. The pale red color of the old, musty, mangled metals that lined the body of the machine, gave the tractor ancient character. The soft, spongy cushioned seating that originally came with the tractor, had over time, slowly disappeared. The bare metallic seat casing, which was as hard as a rock, stood as the only remnant of the original seat. “Keep the tractor on the left side of the road and look where you are going,” Egbert would constantly reinforce, as he showed me how to drive the …show more content…
Most youths in the area we lived, saw Egbert as an influential father-figure, because of that, he was able to help straightened some of their twisted outlook on life. Roger, for instance, who lived a few blocks from where we lived, was a well-known troublemaker in the neighborhood. Often times, he would enter into someone’s home without permission, remove valuable items from the residence without the owner 's consent, and would fail to return the things he took. In other words, he was a well-known thief. After the 5th time he went to jail, I had lost count, but I’m sure he had gone there more than a million times. But even so, that didn’t deter my grandfather from employing Roger when he came desperately searching for a job. When everyone else shunned Roger because of his notorious reputation, my grandfather accepted him with open arms. Roger worked with grandpa on the farm for 2 consecutive years. During his first year on the farm, Roger could barely manage to do all of what was required, he did not even know how to use a bush Wacker to cut the grass, much less a machete. However, by the time it reached the second year, Roger was entirely changed. The individual that once was viewed as a thief got transformed by Egbert, into

Standing on the curb, Veronica pulled her jacket tighter against the breeze, and exhaled the slightest bit when the charger came into view. Through the car’s heavy tint, she couldn’t see the driver exactly, but the effortlessly smug look from the driver’s seat when she climbed in was instantly familiar. Hands at her sides, feeling the seat’s leather as he peeled away from the curb, Veronica had to miss the bike, a little. Sure, the threat of death rang less imminent, even in the seat termed ‘shotgun,’ but oddly enough, sharing a console felt more intimate than the physical proximity of sharing the motorcycle. “Are you gonna tell me what this is about?”…

We vaulted into what we called the “Rhino”, a quad equipped with a driver’s and passenger’s seat.…

Equiano was born to a family with slaves in Africa and talks about how his dad bought and sold slaves in marketplaces. He says “they were the only prisoners of war” or “convicted of kidnapping or adultery. ”1 Because of this, it gives a sense of these people not being slaves but rather they just being punished for wrongdoings or misfortune. Equiano eventually ended up in Barbados and was tied up with the other slaves to be sold.…

It is exceedingly clear that in Equiano’s life that slavery played a monumental role. It was clear as I was reading, how impactful slavery and slave trade were on Equiano, and the millions of other Africans at that time. Though slavery was a very dark, and destructive time in the history of mankind, I think personally that Equiano would have never been the man he eventually turned out to be, if it was not of his trails and perils faced during slavery. This leads for me to talk about how slavery eventually led to Equiano finding “himself” in a matter of speech. Equiano grew up, not at all like you or me, he sporadically was positioned and moved, to different places, with different slave owners, new people, new surroundings.…
