Good Samaritan Policy

It seems to happen all the time, and people always seem to be fixing it, but why is hazing still a problem? The definition of Hazing is the imposition of humiliating physical training and initiation tasks that are part of a program. Hazing seems to happen mainly in the Greek life during the week long process of pledging. This can be caused by excessive drinking, dangerous activities, irresponsibility, etc. Hazing has been brought into the public eye many times, but it doesn’t seem to be disappearing. Many people wish to think that it is but in reality, like the University of Maine found, 55% of students who participate in group activities connected to sororities or fraternities are hazed. There have been many instances where hazing has caused …show more content…
One solution that will be very helpful is actually one we have here at the University at Buffalo. This fix that is available is called the Good Samaritan Policy. This policy was made for a situation where a student can call if another student has consumed alcohol or drugs to a point of severe intoxication or injury and needs medical assistance. This policy is not to be confused with New York State’s Good Samaritan Law, because the one at UB only applies to the university’s policies, such as eliminating judicial consequences for the students involved. In order for the policy to apply, students must take appropriate actions in accepting the completion of educational activities about alcohol and …show more content…
A lot of people will support the Greek system and there are multiple reasons why they should. Being involved in a fraternity or sorority is good for many reasons, for example, being connected with other students, having the opportunity to take part in charity work and for some, increasing the probability of finding a job in the future. Many don’t see the good that come out of the Greek life because there are instances when something goes horribly wrong, especially in matters of hazing. The statistics prove that not all students who do pledge are hazed so one can see how this topic would be controversial. Another solution that might be helpful in dealing with this reality of hazing would be to do more good than bad. Now, some may say that they do plenty of good, while that is true in some cases, but sometimes you want to do enough good where it can be seen. Putting the energy of the members into a big charitable project will help make a name for that house, and will distract the sisters, brothers and pledges from participating in dangerous activities. This solution could work if the University would make it mandatory to spend x amount of hours on this project and set a deadline for maybe say, the end of pledge

Christmas is a time full of beautiful decorations that cover houses with lights, wreaths, and tacky Santa Clauses. It seems nowadays everyone decorates for the holiday season, even universities Greek life. One night last year during holiday season, a member of Alpha Delta Pi decided to play a practical joke on the fraternity boys who were trying to be festive. “It’s not what it looks like”, this is what the majority of members of a sorority or fraternity would respond after being asked about Greek life. Why is that they feel like they have to say that? One word: Marketing. The way sororities and fraternities are portrayed to the public gives off a bad image and reputation about the members and their community. Any person who has not been part of Greek life and does not have any information about this community and its activities they would think sororities and fraternities are just a big house full of college people just having fun, drinking, and sleeping around.…

Hazing used to be a problem in Greek life. I want to emphasize the word “used.” Hazing used to be an incredibly large problem nation-wide in sororities; However, hazing is no longer an issue in most sorority chapters. Of course I cannot say it never happens because that would be an extremely far stretch of the truth, but I can say that the University of Kentucky has a strict “no hazing” policy currently in effect (University). In no way, shape, or form is hazing permitted on the university’s campus.…

BUZZY--UNC PRESENTATION— What we have begun to learn within all of these scandals is that big schools find loopholes for their student-athletes to boost their academics instead of these student-athletes fulfilling their academic requirements on their own. Regardless of what sport you play there are ways around going to class and getting good marks, so that you can focus more of your time towards the athletic side of your student athlete life. The University of North Carolina Chapel-Hill has been under investigation for certain scandals dating back to the early '90s. The biggest scandal from UNC has to do with student-athletes taking questionable classes to boost their GPA which allowed them to remain eligible for their sport.…

Each year, thousands of young people tragically lose their lives due to alcohol poisoning and other alcohol related injuries that were unintentional ("The Medical Amnesty Initiative."). In situations where a minor is in need of emergency medical attention, studies show that the worry is more about getting into trouble and receiving a Minor in Possession/Consumption of alcohol (MIP//MIC) ticket, instead of the well being of that person. As a result, lives are put at risk. That is exactly why the medical amnesty policy was put into place, so underage drinkers could put their worries aside and do the right thing. The medical amnesty policy will change the way students and underage drinkers handle an emergency situation.…

I can come up with one idea off the top of my head that can help with the problem without resorting to community help or financial support. Accordingly, mental health on any basis should be accounted for between family and friends. Therefore, if I were to see my friends drinking, I would want to be the first to screen them to see if they can even drive prior to the police doing so, and provide the appropriate services needed. However, like I said before in my other discussion post, shuttling services should be a norm at bars to help alleviate the concern. Despite that, drinking is a recreational activity that shouldn't be inhibited as it brings pleasure and relief from a terrible day, but instead, monitor as a community.…

Do you know someone that has consumed alcohol at an early age? Growing up alcohol was very evident in my local junior high and high school. My peers consistently talked about going out on the weekends, sometimes even the week and boasting about being the biggest drinker at a local bar they snuck in to or even going as far as describing extravagant narratives about not remembering the night before from partying too extensively. Underage drinking on college campuses are a common issue nationwide. While students and faculty alike are all aware of the issue not much is done or can be done to end underage consumption.…

The two important topics that I believe residents should be educated on when they live in campus housing are: the importance of embracing and respecting diversity as well as the dangers of drug use and alcohol consumption. I believe that each resident should be informed of the importance of embracing and respecting diversity whether it is racial, sex, sexual orientation, or even socioeconomically. I often hear people use homophobic and racist comments either as direct insults or in regular conversation and I feel that such language, which is very inconsiderate, derives not just from hate but ignorance. This topic is important because everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect no matter what.…

First, colleges and universities should address the use of alcohol on campus. This begins with more closely regulating alcohol use on campus. A total prohibition on alcohol on campus would most assuredly move most of the problems off campus. But a sensible regulatory environment that holds everyone involved responsible when alcohol is being consumed. All local laws should be strictly enforced and age requirements should be made known to all organizations.…

In the Good Samaritan Home case, multiple nursing aids were accused of tormenting patients in Albert Lea, Minnesota. There were 8 total but two of the aides had no record of any criminal charges against them. 2 of the nursing aides, Ashton Larson and Brianna Broitzman, were convicted with fifth-degree assault, abuse of vulnerable adult by caregiver, abuse of a vulnerable adult with sexual contact, disorderly conduct and failing to report suspected maltreatment (Turley, 2008). Both Ashton and Brianna were sentenced to serve a 60-day jail term as soon as the court hearing was over(Press, 2011). These case facts did give a rise to a criminal case and could have to a civil case between Good Samaritan Society and the nursing home that the incidents…

Anxiety can also cause physical stress and strain on the body. If your college student was mentally abused during the fraternity hazing process and they are now dealing with mental health issues because of it, or they fear the other people in the fraternity, it’s time to get legal help. Young adults coming to campus and leaving their parents for the first time can be vulnerable to peer pressure and to the excitement of independence, but this doesn’t mean that they should have to be abused and suffer to fit in with upperclassmen. If you have proof to show that your young adult was treated unbearably and that they suffered immensely while they were being hazed by the fraternity, you want to get a lawyer that can start working with you to make a case.…
