Throughout the book, Walls endured many struggles while traveling with her dysfunctional family. Jeannette’s father is constantly getting in the way of her success, from stealing her money to not always making her go to school. From my last 3 years of running cross county I have learned a lot of things. One is that you should never give up, second is that if you work hard enough then you can achieve whatever you put your mind to, and third is how you can go from disliking something to loving something. How I've learned these things from cross county is when I first started cross country, my sophomore year I couldn't run to save my life. Coach would always time us on how fast we could run two miles and I would always be last and be so far behind everyone else which was quite embarrassing but I couldn't help it I had just started and I'd never ran before in my life, at my very first meet I couldn't even run the first mile and I ended up having to drop out. After that I didn't like cross county at all because I wasn't good at it…

Leading up to the Tough Guy Tough Gal Challenge we tried to train as specifically as possible to the type of physical challenges we could expect. The idea of sport-specific training refers to “being able to duplicate or imitate a specific skill or aspect of one’s sport or activity”, thus, it is critical when training for a purpose or event such as Tough Guy Tough Gal. For our training programme, each week we completed a 50 minute circuit session, a 1 km run with a 2 min rest (increased dist. each week), and a Long Slow Distance (LSD) - also known as continuous training. I also had both a soccer training and game each week.…

I love running track. I know, it isn’t the most glamorous or exciting sport, but there’s nothing like the feeling of crouching at the start line flanked by athletes from all over the country. For me, running track is more than just racing for times or records, it’s a chance to represent my high school. My school has a reputation for being the nerdy and un-athletic school. To be fair, our mathlete team is ferocious.…

As a child I was unimaginably self conscious about my height. Looking back on it I think it might have been because people would always tell me I was blocking their view, and making me sound like a nuisance. I had pretty much always felt this way until 8th grade when my P.E. coach asked me if I had ever run track. As I walked into the echo filled gym that smelled of socks, and sweat I passed my 5ft tall P.E. teacher, Coach Atkinson, she unexpectedly took me aside and said what every person says when they meet me ‘How.…
