Most people know or can imagine to what extent they would go if they were starving. Jess Walter’s choice of words in his short story, such as, “It ain’t enough for no f*****g fish and chips.” allows us to feel the character’s frustration through the text (157). These men aren’t superstars, just ordinary people trying to find where their next meal is coming from and to feel a release from their present circumstances. It is the simple pursuit and dedication to what they began that forces readers to identify with them. They seem genuine in their journey to attain money.
How innocent and genuine they seem is overcome by their extensive use of profanity. This use of explicit words does not portray any of the characteristics of a good role model. Though it makes the characters more believable and realistic, it turns many readers away. The good morals in the story, such as, dedication, hard work, and teamwork are now overshadowed by the overuse of cursing. The constant outflow is influential to any reader.
