Benchmark Assignment: Ethical Dilemmas The issue of abortion has almost no equal in possessing the potential to polarize two sides of an issue, often resulting in high-emotion and on rare occasions leading to violent reactions including the bombing of abortion clinics and attacks on the doctors who perform them. The controversial issue was decided in the 1973 Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, which affirmed a woman’s right to have an abortion. However, the issue still remains unresolved in the hearts and minds of many across the country as battle lines are drawn on when life begins. This paper will examine both sides of the abortion debate, and in particular, whether an abortion would be an appropriate response by someone who has become aware that the child they are carrying has Down syndrome.…

    1. In our class readings, verb tense definitely affected the stories for me. The verb tense of Good People, by David Foster Wallace, seems to change multiple times in the story. To me, a lot of this story felt as if it were told in present tense, but at times past tense was used when talking about events from the past, and there even seemed to be a bit of future tense mixed in. “That she will carry this and have it; she has to.…

Sallie Tisdale wrote an essay titled We Do Abortions Here: A Nurse’s Story. After reading her personal essay about her job I concluded she doesn’t necessarily propose her opinion. While her opinion does not seem clear, I believe that Tisdale wants the readers to form their own opinion on the situation. As I read We Do Abortions Here: A Nurse’s Story, my opinion began to regenerate on abortion. I believe that there are certain situations that do call for abortion.…

The environment one lives in, whether it is the setting or the people around us, is influential and can change one's life for the good or the bad. Specifically, Gus Van Sant, the director of the movie, Good Will Hunting urges surrounding yourself with well educated, advanced people in contrast to low life people who hold you back because doing so will enable you to express yourself, step out of your comfort zone and voice emotions that allow you to have a fulfilling life. Firstly, by surrounding himself with lowlifes, Will is held back; however, when he spends time with better people, he starts becoming an actualized human being and fulfills life, which reinforces the positive of surrounding yourself with the right kind of people. A backbone built on honor, code, and loyalty defines the “chain-of-command” mentality that associates with the military’s public persona. No clearer is this than in Rob Reiner’s A Few Good Men, bringing the judgement line of a military order and a gradually rationalized act of unethical action to the forefront. Commentary considered by Phillip Zimbardo’s “The Stanford Experiment” and Herbert C. Kelman and V. Lee Hamilton…

A major theme of Flannery O 'Connor 's “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” is what makes a person good. There is no clear answer, neither in the text nor in life. It is safe to say that a good person can be defined as one that is honest, kind, and always tries to do what is right. It is ironic then, maybe even a bit hypocritical, that the Grandmother is one of the most immoral characters in the story and yet she spends much of her time talking about what makes people good, judging others based on little to no information about them, and trying to convince the Misfit, a serial killer that just murdered her family, of his own goodness.…
