Character are known for having a different values and different ways of handling them. Some of the characters in this novel are Jake, Brett, Robert, and Frances, and Michael. All of these characters have some type of value in the book and different situations lead to the showing of these values. Jake, the narrator of the story speaks a lot when I come to his friends.
Jake being associated with most of the characters in the book, many people come to him for their sake. So, one of Jake's values is him being trustworthy. When Frances came to have a meal with Jake and Robert, she had a conversation with Jake about her and Robert’s station. “Oh nothing,.. except that he wants to leaves me” (53). One of her values is her ability to calmly stop any situation, in which she believes needs to be stopped. “Good Night night, Jake. Good night, darling. I won’t see you again” (71). This part of the novel shows how Brett is willing to stop any relationship in which she feels would put her relationship in jeopardy. However, some may refute the idea of Brett being committed when it come to her relationship. Even though Brett did tell Jake she wouldn't see him again she wnt against that idea. “I did not see Brett again until she came back from San Sebastian” (75). This can go against the argument that says Brett does have some type of value when it comes to a relationship. However, the people she associates herself with does have some type of value when it comes to personality. Michael,whos is engaged to Brett, has a value when it comes to personality. Michael is someone everyone knows as having fun, so his value good be his ability to bring positive activity when it comes to being around one another. “ “I'm not tight.” Mike says ” (85).
