In the short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O 'Connor, a very disoriented family of five is taking a “peaceful” trip to Florida. Although the father of the family, Bailey, is afraid of cats, Grandmother brings along her furry friend anyway; to add to this, Grandmother then begins to talk about an old house she remembers from her childhood that is believed along the way. However, it is not. When Grandmother realizes this information is incorrect, instead of telling Bailey to turn around she was wrong, her pride allows her to keep quiet about her realizations. However, before she can become content with herself, she jumps as if someone, maybe even God, hit her for being prideful and kicks the basket where the cat was hiding. In …show more content…
In the story, the Misfits sarcastic attempt to wow the ladies when he says, “I 'm sorry I do not have a shirt on before you ladies … We buried ours before we escaped” tells the reader he is unlike most (O 'Connor 21). He is suspicious and unlike most because he actually shows a little bit of compassion while waiting to complete the murder plot. He attempts to be polite by apologizing for not wearing a shirt. Also, when he is prepared to send the mother and June Star to die, he asks, “would you and that little girl like to step off yonder with Bobby Lee and Hiram and join your husband" ( O’Connor 25)? The Misfit shows kindness in his actions by politely asking instead of demanding the mother and June Star to join Bailey and John Wesley in the walk to death. In the story, Misfit makes the comment about how it is too late for him to make it to Heaven. God could never forgive him, so he keeps on killing. However, he …show more content…
Throughout the story, the author shines a small light on the good inside of the Misfit while the evil tries to overcome him. After the wreck, Misfit has everyone sit on the side of the road; during this time, Bailey leans over and whispers into grandmother’s ear. Grandmother begins to cry, and Misfit says, “Lady, don 't you get upset. Sometimes a man says things he don 't mean. I don 't reckon he meant to talk to you thataway.” This shows that he has some good in him because he instantly sends Bailey and John Wesley away to be killed. To further his goodness, he speaks highly of his family. “"Yes mam, the finest people in the world.God never made a finer woman than my mother and my daddy 's heart was pure gold” (O’Connor 19). He speaks as if his family was the best there ever was. Although, he does speak of the faults when he says, “My daddy said I was a different breed of dog from my brothers and sisters. 'You know, ' Daddy said, 'it 's some that can live their whole life out without asking about it and it 's others has to know why it is, and this boy is one of the latters. He 's going to be into everything” (O’Connor 21)! To further this, he says, “Daddy was a card himself. You couldn 't put anything over on him. He never got in trouble with the Authorities, though. Just had the knack of handling them." This shows that although his family is not perfect; they still have his heart. This is an example of
