Too bad the citizens in Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” and Kurt Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron” can’t seem to realize this. In Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery”, an old village holds an annual ritualistic “lottery” that takes place to limit the population size by means of stoning the “lucky winner” to death. Kurt Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron” is satirical dystopian short story set in a futuristic society where its citizens are forced to wear handicaps that make them “equal” intellectually and physically. But why is this? Yes, the truth can bring peacefulness to one’s mind, but at the same time it can destroy a person completely. In “The Jewelry”, by Guy de Maupassant, through the marriage and death of M. Lantin’s first wife the reader sees the pros and cons of M. Lentin realizing the truth about his wife.…

I live in an area that is a cross between the ghetto and suburbia. In my neighborhood, I can literally see the difference a block makes. The race division, the housing projects that grace Beach Channel drive, the much more elaborate homes a block away in Shore Front Parkway, and the rich versus the poor. We often perceive the rich as well refined, privileged with better education and somehow well mannered.…

Thomas Nagel is a New York University professor and has written many things regarding the mind and moral theory. In moral luck Nagel thinks through the whole Kantian view of morality which shows that everyone is equal participants in the moral enterprise. Nagel argues that the Kantian view is too simple and doesn’t take into account the way external factors impinge upon us. Nagel brings up four different types of moral luck: constitutional luck, circumstantial luck, consequential luck which means consequences retrospectively justifies an otherwise immoral act (or fail to justify an otherwise more act), and consequential luck which the consequences affect the type or quality of blame or remorse (or moral praise). Having luck, whether it be good or bad, should impact how a person should act towards things.…

Why are some people born into a life of poverty while others are born into a life of luxury? Are the people who were born into wealthy families luckier than people born into poor families, or do poor people deserve to be in their situation. This demonstrates the theory of moral luck. Moral luck is the concept that an agent is assigned moral blame or praise for an action or its consequences, even if the action or its consequences were completely outside the agent’s control. In other words, “Moral luck occurs when an agent can be correctly treated as an object of moral judgment despite the fact that a significant aspect of what she is assessed for depends on factors beyond her control” (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy).…

While reading “The Jewelry,” I found it to be an interpretive style of fiction. Maupassant’s primary goal is not only to entertain the readers, but to engage the readers mind into finding the deeper and hidden message that lies within the story. During the beginning of “The Jewelry,” I thought I knew what the outcome would be, however that was not the case. The plot took a completely different turn than I had expected it to. Maupassant used a lot of irony throughout the story, which hid the actual message of it pretty well.…
