The popularity of tattoos has grown a lot with the beginning of the 21st century, and they have become more and more accepted and tolerated. A poll conducted by Fox News in March 2014 suggests that one out of every five Americans who voted has at least one or more tattoos (13). The most common reasons to get a tattoo are to perpetuate something of value – a dead or living person and religious views, or to express individuality. Usually imprisoned people tend to get a lot of tattoos all over their bodies, especially on their necks and faces. For instance, a very popular one among prisoners is the teardrop tattoo. It could symbolize several things, including that the person who wears it has killed someone. This means that when policemen see it they would automatically become suspicious of the individual they spot it on, and they would perform a routine check. However, not only people carrying this particular tattoo get the so called routine checks. The police are normally prejudiced when it comes to inked people even though they become more and more tolerated. Thus, tattooed people get treated like criminals. Now imagine what happens if a person has face or neck tattoos. He or she might receive an even worse treatment simply because the authorities would feel provoked to have a more aggressive behavior towards them. This type of tattoos is popular among mob members and some of them have their own gang sign, hieroglyph, or a certain drawing which represents their devotion to the gang; often it can be seen on a face or a neck. Employers will always have certain policies when it comes to hiring new staff, and in most cases, facial tattoos will remain a taboo.
