A college education is indeed becoming more of a necessity than an advantage in today’s society. With many jobs requiring at least a high school diploma, many higher end jobs are requiring a college degree to even be considered for it. The author of the article “3 Reasons College Still Matters”, Andrew Delbanco, has the right idea of why college education is becoming essential and brings up many good points to support his theory. The government and society in general has good intentions in educating its people, but has the wrong approach. Formal education is now taught in a specific manner and standardized tests are given to equally judge every student. This of course is easy to spot something wrong with when you think about it. Math, Science, English and History are the anchors of education and the foundations for which every degree is based off. We as a nation, whether it’s the right choice or not, value academic education more than liberal forms of education such as fine arts. In today’s world most people can agree that getting a degree in fine arts isn’t the wisest choice compared to every other option. Fine art degrees are statistically proven to earn less than their academic counterparts and so in a sense it’s discouraging the next Michelangelo to paint. They both agree that it doesn’t necessarily matter what you major in due to the fact that “you have spent four years developing a set of skills that will serve you in good stead in the postindustrial job market” (Rotella 517).
