An article that was first published by Empire Magazine Issue #17 by Henri Behar says that Martin Scorsese (director of good fellas) experienced a close encounter shooting while just leaving the back seat of an acquaintance's car. As the car drove away another mysterious black car drives up and shoots down the car that Martin had just exited. This incident has influenced Scorsese and enabled great directing qualities in him for this film. Martin portrayed scenes that accompanied the mob setting by focusing on possessions, face features, the enviornmet and structure of the films presentation. The next quality aspect that contributed the film’s success was the way the cinematography was displayed by Michael Ballhaus. Such as the close camera shots taken of the setting, which showed things like luxury foods, dining areas, and loads of money displaying the mob life’s wealth without having to verbally say it. Schoonmaker used a technique called freeze frame and was used to signify important memories in Henrys life. For instance, during the scene when Henrys father gets upset at him for missing school, Henry is forced to stop making deliveries for the mob. In result, the mob took Henry to point out his mailman and continued by roughing the mailman up to make sure he wouldn’t deliver letters to Henrys house anymore. The screen freezes when the mail man’s head is in the pizza oven, which signifies that Henry realizes violence is used in means to get what you want. It worked because Henry didn’t receive mail from anybody and even said his mom had to file a complaint about it. Another freeze frame, scene was when Henry first meets jimmy. During the narration Henry says “see, Jimmy was one of the most feared guys in the city. He was first locked up at 11”. Then the frame freezes on Jimmy’s face, which signifies another importance to Henry. This scene signifies that Henry has a lot of respect for Jimmy and shows when Henry continues to speak highly of him during the narration. Henry says “he couldn’t have been more than 28 or 29 at the time, but he was already a legend.” Which shows that the freeze frame was to imply that jimmy was a role model to Henry and later becomes his mentor.
Good Fellas ultimately was an outstanding film due to the unique acting and characterization put in by Joe Pesci and
