GOOD Effective Management Practices in Overcrowded Jails
Jail management is one of the issues in criminal justice that has been in existence for some time now. Indeed, for a long time, jails have been used as the best alternative in managing crime while holding inmates awaiting trials. Jails are primarily expected to hold defendants as they await trial and provide custody for inmates serving short sentences. ( Tataro 2014). Needs such as safety needs, psychological needs, and self-esteem needs are crucial to reducing dangerous behaviors among inmates (Scott 2014). When inmates are confined in crowded jails, they always tend to have a lot of demand, due to the unfavorable condition they find themselves. Inmates request should not be ignored at all times; many inmates tend to be desperate and break rules to gain attention when they feel their claim are not being answered. Therefore, it is important that officers attend to an inmate in times of needs to prevent unwanted behaviors. Furthermore, Jail Management should also provide more specific programs that can bring inmate together; keeping inmate occupied with productive activities. Programs such as vocational and educational programs help inmate interact more while accomplishing their social needs in a pre-social environment (Scott 2014). Also, programs conducted in jails help release the tension of them being in overcrowded jails. Officers also become less stress since inmate gets the chance to be out of their cells for a couple of times also help management team to handle inmates. However, when jail management is not able to meet inmate’s social needs, many at times they involve themselves in gang-related activities, depression and inappropriate sexual misconduct and violent behaviors which violate jail conduct. Food can also be a prime motivator for unwanted inmate behavior when a jail is overcrowded. Changes in food service routine and a small portion of food given to inmates under these crowded situations can also lead to unwanted behavior among inmates. Therefore, jail management has to see through that inmate 's hunger is satisfied; increase the number or times of meal they eat in a day, have the right amount of calories so that they will act in a more desirable way.
