This is Mrs. Hopewell’s daughter; she was born with the name Joy, but legally changed her name to Hulga. She has a wooden leg because she was shot during a hunting accident. She also suffers from a heart condition and the doctor told her that she probably has ten more years to live. She is also an atheist. I believe she changed her name to Hulga because that is the ugliest name she thought of. She feels ugly and that is why she is so mean. Some may say she believes she knows more than others because she is well educated, but this know it all mentality goes back to her vulnerability. When we first met Hulga-Joy she was just horrible, she was a know it all who no one can talk to. She used her higher education as a clutch. She thought no one could ever know as much as her or even half of what she knows. Then when she met Manley all that went out the door, she tried to still act hard but it didn’t last for too long when he started telling her sweet nothings she became weak and started showing her vulnerable side. This is the good in the bad, no matter how tough or cold hearted you think you are there is someone or something that can counteract that, they come and change your world, they make you see the world in a different light. Then you have Manley on the other hand to everyone else he’s a devout Christian, a country boy, one of the good country people. He walks around with numerous bibles preaching the word, but in one of the bibles he has liquor and all other things but no one knows that but Hulga. “He must have been selling them to the Negroes back in there. He was so simple…but I guess the world would be better off if we were all that simple.” This is when readers can tell he has everyone fooled. Mrs. Hopewell still believe that he is some wholesome boy. But in all actuality he’s worse than everyone else. Manley proves he’s smarter than Hulga because he made her believe that he was a good man when he really is more of
