In the real world, there is always a struggle between the good and the evil. Where the protagonist is the one to prevail, but instead like the two stories the antagonist overcomes all odds and get away with it. “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” and “Good Country People” by Flannery O’Connor reply on similar themes such as one’s faith being tested in difficult situations and religious boundaries. Due to this, “characters often leave their native surroundings with a prophetic urge to renew themselves; they either return unsuccessfully...or die horribly” (Shinn, 68). O’Connor uses “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” and “Good Country People”, to depict evil through the actions of the characters and the overall plot of the stories.

In “Good Country People” Manley Pointer is a con artist who disguises himself as a Bible salesman to rob unsuspecting country folk and the disabled. Pointer uses simple persuasion to convince others to buy his “Bibles” such as “I see you have no family Bible in your parlor, I see that is the one lack you got!” (O’Connor, “Good Country People” 577). He first attempts to convince the head of the household in order to get a footing into the homes he and thens sees if there is anything he could take in sight, but soon after if his point is not getting across he dumb himself down for pity. “Well lady, I’ll tell you the truth--not many people want to buy one nowadays and besides, I know I’m real simple. I don’t know how to say a thing, but to say it. I’m just a country boy” (“Good Country People” 577). Pointer demonstrates evil by misleading others to believe he knows the word of God, but uses it to his advantage to enter homes.“I don’t want to go to college. I want to devote my life to Chrustain service. See,” (“Good Country People” 578).
