Good Country People is a short story which takes place in a rural farm in Georgia. Mrs. Hopewell is in charge of farm with her daughter Joy, which is thirty-two years old and lost one of her legs in a childhood shooting accident. Mr. and Mrs. Freeman live are tenants on the farm and help the single mother run it. Mrs. Hopewell and her daughter joy are two completely different characters. Mrs. Hopewell is always in a good mood and a very jolly person and Joy doesn't like it. Joy on the other hand is a miserable and stubborn person, which is very ironic that she is named Joy. She eventually changed her name to Hulga which to her was “the ugliest name Mrs. Hopewell could imagine”. Mrs. Hopewell then invites Manley Pointer, a bible salesman, over
