Before John was hanged Danforth told him he has to sign a paper so people will see that even John Proctor confessed. John refused because he wanted to keep his name and tells why. “God does not need my name nailed upon the church! Good knows how black my sins are! It is enough” (Miller, 240). John already confessed and says God sees that and that is the only thing that matters. By confessing what he has done, John has said enough and will go with his name. “Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!”(Miller, 241) John feels that if he gives his name he will not have his goodness anymore. If John puts signs his name he will be living a lie and the people will not the goodness in him. “I have three children- how may I teach them to walk like men in the world and I sold my friends.” (Mille, 240). Again, John feels that if he gives his name he will lying and his friends with dishonor him. John’s dignity will be gone and he will not have any goodness to prove. As a result of John Proctor keeping his name, he died knowing that he still had goodness in him despite what he did by giving honesty, integrity and keeping his reputation of a well-respected good man. Sometimes we may fall and even though we make bad decisions does not mean we are wrongful people. We will make mistakes but we can grow from them and we can still show goodness. It doesn’t matter what someone has done and how bad it was, everyone can have goodness but it is up to us if we want to show it and how to become better
