There are many in this world that have been both good and bad, or have done both good and bad things. In the book The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, it is depicting a story about a town called Salem. In this town, the Devil has been said to have taking refuge in the town and has gathered some witches. The town goes into hysteria and only a few are wise enough to know that this is not true. One of these characters is John Proctor, who owns a farm within the area of town. John has a wife, Elizabeth Proctor, and for a while she has been cold and suspicious to him. Elizabeth kicked out a girl, suspected to be in late teens, after finding out that John had committed adultery with her. John has tried to make amends, but has been unsuccessful. While John has made a grave error in committing this sin, he is still a good man because of how he tries to fix and get back what has been lost.

John has sinned by being unable to control himself and commenting adultery. Though he is found out by Elizabeth and admits to it in front of her, he still sinned and lies to those who he does not tell. He later meets this girl again while alone and is being accused of looking at her window almost every week, though this may be the girl just trying to get under his skin. The girl said in a conversation with John that, “ ‘I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart!’ ” (25). This shows that this has been going on long enough for the girl to get more knowledge and to constantly want to be with John. Though John was being pushed from his wife because of her ailness, it does not give him an excuse to go searching for other ways to “release himself from stress.” The sin of adultery is one of the worst to commit when married, and can never be forgotten by the spouse if found out, so it is forever a stain on John’s life that he will forever
