Good And Evil In Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown

“Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne perplexed my mind continuously throughout the story due to its complexity but I slowly began to develop my own interpretation of events as I read the text several times. In the beginning, a young man, Goodman Brown, is with his wife Faith, a character who symbolizes his Christian religion, and they are saying their goodbyes. Brown appears to be saddened by leaving his wife but makes his way to a forest that night to go on an “errand” as he states early in the text. The audience then learns that his intentions are in an evil way for he is having a meeting with someone deemed wicked. I believe this portion can be interpreted as Goodman Brown beginning the path to questioning his religion. He goes into this meeting knowing full well what the other man’s intentions are but without clear provocation goes along with him. This evil man can be interpreted as the devil in terms of symbolism with proof of this …show more content…
One of the examples that brings forth this change is the new-found knowledge that multiple family members have also meet with this sinful man and acquired his help in matters they did in their lives. Knowing this, two men he admired for their convictions seeking aid from the devil, he felt shocked and the doubt from then only grew more with each happening from then on. We are introduced to multiple characters Brown is familiar with practicing hypocrisy and this sways him greatly. It is at one point he wishes to stop to remain faithful but soon abandons his religion by taking the serpent cane and continuing deeper into the forest. He later sees a disturbing site that can be decoded, like the rest of the evening, as a dream but I think its Browns new idea of those around

Most of Hawthorne’s critics feel as if “Young Goodman Brown” one of his best works. In my opinion D.C. McKeithan chooses to interpret Hawthorne’s tale by using an example of a man who is saddened into distrust by the sins of the people surrounding him. He is made skeptical and untrusting of others because of his own contributes into sin. McKeithan goes around this by mainly seeing that while there are a bunch of different interpretations, past critics have failed to realize some of the most apparent parts of the story.…

For instance, when Goodman Brown and Ivy go into the woods, they return a different person. In Young Goodman Brown, the woods are devilish, frightening, and dark. He does not know what will happen as he enters the woods, but at the end, he becomes a different person than what he was. “On the Sabbath day, when the congregation were singing a holy psalm, he could not listen because an anthem of sin rushed loudly upon his ear and drowned all the blessed strain.” This shows evidence that the Goodman Brown is not the same person because he allowed the devil to take control of his mind and affect his life.…

Literary critic, Rena Korb, suggests that Brown, who represents mankind, is at a point of perfect humility in the beginning because he recognizes himself as a sinner. However, when Brown finds the rest of his village, but most importantly, his wife Faith, at the witches meeting, he abandons his faith of godliness in mankind. It is this decision that leads Brown to his inevitable destruction by searching for salvation where it is not – in himself (Korb…

The Devil represents evil and he knows that he will bring him harm. Even though Goodman Brown seeks the Devil it is shown that he is still hesitant, saying his “father never went into the woods on such an errand, nor his father before him” and that they have “been a race of honest men and good Christians”(Hawthorne, 26). Goodman Brown, despite wanting to sin, still believes deep down that seeking out the Devil is trouble. The Devil, however, scoffs at the idea that the Browns were a good family. He has had multiple run ins with Goodman Brown 's father and grandfather, telling him that his grandfather “lashed the Quaker woman so smartly through the streets of Salem” and that his father “set fire to an Indian village, in King Philip 's War”(Hawthorne, 26).…

They were my good friends, both; and many pleasant walk had we had along this path, and returned merrily after midnight.” (Hawthorne 2). Even with this information Brown does not acknowledge the fact that he himself may not be saved, even with the help of Faith because he can already be considered evil by blood.
