“Young Goodman Brown” is the story of a young man’s adventure through the forest, which, when examined contextually, is actually a disturbing criticism of Puritan morality. In the short story “Young Goodman Brown”, the author Nathaniel Hawthorne uses symbolism with the names of Goodman Brown and his wife Faith to assess the necessity of faith in the lives of religious men and the importance of faith in maintaining one’s trust of God’s goodness. Hawthorne’s use of name symbolism in “Young Goodman Brown” reveals the most important quality of religious piety, which is to have complete faith in one’s God. The main character Goodman Brown and his wife Faith are both symbols to establish the representation of every man’s faith.…

Perhaps this is the beginning of the end to his innocence. Receiving more information on the people of his village such as the deacons, “The deacons of many a church have drunk communion wine with me” (pg.81); leads Brown to question the faith of his own people. While cautiously continuing, and seeing Goody Cloyse, he doesn’t want to be seen with a man who may resemble something immoral. When Goody and the man begin to converse, Brown is able to see the man be identified as the devil, and Goody Clause a witch. The latter part of Hawthorne’s short story focuses on how Young Goodman Brown felt after returning from the woods, and the meeting with the devil. He returns to town and ignores everyone he comes in contact with, heading straight into his house. Then, on Sabbath day, while the church goers sang holy psalms,“...he could not listen because an anthem of sin rushed loudly upon his ear and drowned all the blessed strain” (Hawthorne 12). Young Goodman Brown cannot listen to the holy psalms because of the guilt he feels inside, sitting in a holy place when he has committed a sin. Because of that, Brown became “a stern, a sad, and a darkly meditative, a distrustful, if not desperate man” (12).…

Evil is understood as the force in nature that oversees and provides a rise to wickedness. Evil is a very difficult subject that many consider displeasing, however, evidence from the stories, “ Young Goodman Brown,”,“ The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and, “ The Devil and Tom Walker,” shows that evil does exist; and has existed since the beginning of time. By reading these three stories the themes of Good vs Evil, “Young Goodman Brown,” greed and gluttony in, “ The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and moral decay in, “ The Devil and Tom Walker,” become quite apparent. If all these themes are put together, it shows that there is great evil in each and every human heart. In the tale, “ Young Goodman Brown,” Brown is representing the common man who is struggling in the fight good against evil, which he portrays by venturing into the forest in the dead of night ( the forest generally representing wickedness), and discovering things that are suddenly shown or understood in reality that all must eventually face— that there is sin within the world and nobody is perfect.…
