The etiological agent of Gonorrhea is Neisseria gonorrhoeae, affects both sexually active males and females of all ages. The chain of transmission of Neisseria gonorrhoeae is by direct sexual contact via vaginal, anal, oral intercourse, or from a mother to their baby, during childbirth. Contact of infectious exudates from mucous membranes of an infected human creates a passageway from one human to another human and/or partner. Gonorrhea is listed as a sexually transmitted disease (STD) and is prevalent in young people 15-24 years of age. It causes an infection to the genitals, rectum and throat and moreover, can cause serious and permanent health problems, if gone untreated. Antibiotics are used to treat gonorrhea however, it has become more difficult to treat, due to antimicrobial resistance. Moreover, gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported …show more content…
Fort Wayne (Allen County) was ranked third with 168. Two other counties within the state of Indiana reported higher ratings per 100,000 populations which topped Allen County: Vanderburg County with 170 and Marion County with 344, in 2013 (Indiana State Department of Health, 2015). According to the Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health Gonorrhea was up 23% in Allen County, from last year (McMahan, & Waldron 2015). The ethnicity breakdown reported for the black/non-Hispanic population is the largest population of reported gonorrhea cases equaling 443 people, in comparison to the white/non-Hispanics population of 188 people reported cases, within Allen County. A minimal total of the Hispanic population reached 25 people and other smaller populations within Allen County reached a total of 28 people, in 2015. Reportable gonorrhea cases by gender show that females equaled 391 and males 293, with an astounding total of 684 cases in Allen County (McMahan, & Waldron
