If students are not engaged in the lesson, change must occur in order for learning to be present. Students are in school for 7-8 hours of their day learning new information all the while their brain neurons are being worked and open. Therefore, although routine is essential to maintain classroom order, it is imperative for teachers to use a variety of teaching approaches to avoid students growing bore or uninterested. I remember when I was observing a Kindergarten class and noted that the teacher used a gonoodle as a brain break for students during lectures or activities. The gonoodle was effective because it allowed students to get up and stretch all while singing songs about the lesson that was being presented. I am a big advocate for students to work in groups because students learn to collaborate which is very important in today’s workforce. Still, I was curious in how groups should be set up for students. That’s when the article provided suggestions in how to set up groups, which I will very much use in the future. I remember when I was in elementary school and loved when I was given opportunities to work with my friends. However, it was evident, that the noise level was higher in the class, than when groups were assigned. Therefore, assigning groups is not bad; in fact I encourage it, especially in primary grade levels. Moreover, whichever groups students are in teachers should explain the expectations for working in groups if not, the classroom can turn to chaos!
