Goneril in the Slytherin House Would one believe that a Shakespearean character could be accepted into one of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry houses? King Lear is a play written by William Shakespeare and takes place in mid-evil times in Britain. Within the play King Lear, who is the present King of Britain, is deciding to step down from his power, and now his job is to divide his kingdom up, and give them to his daughters. The play unravels and shows the consequences of what Lear has done, and shows that his decision and views on how he has divided the kingdom may have been terribly wrong. While this is going on with Lear, another part of the play is taking place, and it is between the king's Earl of Gloucester and his two …show more content…
In the play, King Lear, by William Shakespeare, one of the characters, Goneril, daughter of Lear, could best be acquired and accepted into the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry House: Slytherin, because of her ambitiousness, and ruthless acts to further her …show more content…
Lear has just left Goneril and went to live with Regan, Regan does not like the situation of Lear living with her either, so Goneril ends up working and talking with Regan to get their father out of their way, and no longer their problem. Lear believes that Regan is first on his side, but when Goneril enters and hold Regan's hand, Lear questions this. Goneril defends herself by saying "Why not by th' hand sir. How have I offended you?/All's not offense that indiscretions finds/ And dotage terms so" (II.iv.185-187). Goneril basically just told her father, why wouldn't I be joining sides with my sister? Goneril is working on getting what she wants, by also working together with someone like her, someone in her same realm. Her choice to be helpful towards her sister shows that Goneril is capable of working as a team, and together with someone. The two of them together show how the generation can ban together to take away from the one that gave their all to them, which is a theme within the play. Yet, even though this example shows Goneril working with someone else, it can still show how she is doing anything possible to get what she wants, and to what can ultimately benefit her self in the long

This confusion is only furthered because the characters have the same names as the daughters of King Lear: Regan, Cordelia, and Goneril. This is equal parts beneficial and detrimental to the play. On the one hand, the similarities between the women and their father echoes the relationship between King Lear and his daughters; from their names to the eventual mental decline of their father, to Cordelia’s French ‘exile,’ the important plot points in King Lear also show up in the women’s lives. On the other hand, these similarities make it a slightly confusing play to watch. It is difficult, especially for an audience member not familiar with King Lear, to tell what bits are part of their real lives and what is part of the play.…

Macbeth’s thoughts and actions in the play Macbeth resemble those of Niccolo Machiavelli, a political theorist, in the sense that they both believe that it is better to be feared rather than to be loved. Another base of Machiavelli’s theory that is carried out by Macbeth is the means of deception for personal gain. Macbeth uses deception for his own personal gain. Personal gain is another form of the word “selfish” (getting what you want for yourself).…

Salem, Massachusetts is known for the Salem witch trials. The trials tested the skills and characters of those accused of being a witch. Though the test often consisted of fire and water, if the tension was high enough, a mere accusation had the accused hanged. The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is mostly a typical story of the Salem Witch Trials with all of the tension included. The difference lies in the fact that it is not only the accused being tested under pressure.…

In the very first scene of the play the idea of one having control over one's own fate is evident through the contrasting actions of Cordelia's to those of Goneril and Regans. In Act one scene one of the play King Lear decides to give control of his kingdom to his daughters with each daughter receiving a third of the kingdom. The kings’ only catch being that each of his daughters has to profess their love for him in order to receive their share of the kingdom. Lears two eldest daughters Goneril and Regan comply with Lear's request and both go onto and make outlandish declarations. For example, Goneril claim she loves Lear “No less than life” (I.i.57).…

Chaos is a central theme in Shakespeare’s King Lear. The devastating cruelty and chaotic events that surround King Lear throughout the story are consequences of his obsession with authority. His spiraling fall was initialized by his obsession with authority in his personal and political life. It is only until King Lear endures a literal, and symbolic, storm, does he have some realizations that lead him to release his negative values and mature in hopes to turn around his chaotic disarranged life. The height of the chaotic reign over his life is depicted in Act IV.…

Rejected by his daughters, Lear slowly descends into insanity. Plots and counterplots are exchanged, and by the end of the play Goneril kills both Regan and herself, their scheming leads to Cordelia’s murder, and Lear dies of grief over Cordelia’s death. For me the heart of this play is the disintegration of Lear’s family, and the developing antagonism between Lear and his elder daughters. What fascinates me is the animalistic brutality of these familial relationships, which have degenerated to such a point that Goneril and Regan are willing to murder each other, Cordelia, and their father.…

In a way, the sorting hat can also be viewed as the scorer for a test such as the Big Five personality inventory in Harry Potter’s world. It analyzes a person’s traits, qualities, motivations, and inner strengths while it sits on one of the student’s heads mirroring the way the Big Five test scores a person’s answers in reverse and then totaling them to give an objective rating of where they measure on each scale of the five dimensions (Meyer).…

This is shown through the use of verse and hyperbole of “I love you more than word can wield the matter” where the greed for land is what drives Goneril to say nice words.. However, the irony of lear failing to differentiate authenticity or deception of love results in misjudging Cordelia for feigned love, instigating social, personal and self-conflicts for both lear, his daughters and the society. This plot drive will not only foreshadow complications but also result in the sacrifice of Cordelia and Gloucester. Shakespeare’s use of epiphany of Lear, is shown by misperceiving Goneril’s love with flattery which is portrayed through Goneril’s plosive language, contrasting the poetic language in verse present in the division of the kingdom, exemplifying Goneril’s greed for land the deceptive love expressed for Lear. This parallels with the double plot of Gloucester…
