In a normal world, even the thought of having a child take on the responsibilities of an adult is almost unbelievable. Clearly the children in “Gone” aren’t in a normal situation and they all have to take on the role of adults. When these teens are faced with evil like Caine and the Darkness, they have to fight on their own. These children don’t have adult role models to ask for help anymore. Coming of age is an important theme in “Gone” because each character has their own coming of age moment. Each character has to mature either physically or mentally because of their new environment. Teenagers today go through a coming of age in a very different way. In our world, the problems teens face are passing their driving exam or going to prom. In “Gone”, teenagers have to face life or death situations every day. They grow up in a world where every decision you make could end or save your life.
