During the course of my high school career, I have come to the realization that going through high school is like winning a golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Everyone has a different experience with their golden ticket. Some are repeat winners and some leave the experience too soon. I believed that when I started high school, all of my childhood fun would end. When I walked through the doors of Council Rock South High School South in the summer of 2013, I was unable to anticipate my future ventures, nor could I predict that my belief would be challenged by the loss of three classmates. Over the next few years, new and different opportunities challenged me to believe that transitioning into adulthood would allow me to sustain some of my curiosity.
Like Charlie walking into the Chocolate Factory, it was apparent that I would need to maintain my sense of self. As a result of my desire to impact my fellow student body, I was awarded the most honorable golden ticket: Vice-President of my class during all four years of my high school career. At one point, I found out why I was entrusted by my peers in this leadership role. On August 30, 2014, I felt as though every student’s childhood at Council Rock South’s came to an abrupt end. Without trials and tribulations, a teenager may skyrocket into adulthood too quickly while their childhood naiveté and innocence quickly come to a close. As a result of my four years as a class officer, I learned that sadness and tragedy can bring people together. While vigils and funerals marked the beginning of my sophomore year at Council Rock High School South, the end result was an awakened school community with an awareness that life is fleeting. This community not only cried together, but also learned to regain a sense of
