Golden State Warriors Case Study

Decent Essays
The first big battle of the NBA season is now over, and the Golden State Warriors were far from amazing in a horrific forty-eight minute season debut loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

This huge 29-point loss raises a lot of questions about a team that just last year had a record setting 73-9 season, and that also now has one of the leagues most prolific scorers in Kevin Durant.

Though this was an embarrassing loss for a powerhouse team such as the Warriors, I believe that this is just the first game of 83 and that there is much to look out for before we count them out.

With that said, I believe that there are four key questions going into the season that will determine whether the Warriors will bounce back from this huge first loss.

The first question is will the absence of Andrew Bogut and Harrison Barnes affect the team’s defense? My answer is no. Yes, the Warriors have lost that rim protection in Bogut, and that huge defensive capability in Barnes, which puts a lot of pressure on the team’s defense. But, the Warriors now have Kevin Durant who is a 6’11 threat on both offense and defense, which will soon make up for the size on the Warriors roster. Not to mention that they still have one of the leagues best defensive players in Draymond Green.

My answer is of course. Kevin Durant may be a player that can shine on both ends of the court, but he is only a human that can play only so many minutes. He is also a very unselfish player when it comes to getting his team involved in the action. With this kind of mindset the rest of the key players on the Warriors will have no problem getting the ball as long as he knows you are good for making a

Facing the juggernaut that has been created in Golden State for many years to come, unless James is meshed with another superstar, Irving’s departure will surely prevent any future championship for “the King.” James has depended on Irving’s clutch shots and ability to score for help during the playoffs. Currently, James is 3-5 all time in the Finals. It’s a pretty shabby record compared to that of Jordan’s 6-0 or even Kobe Bryant’s 5-1.…

As has been the case all season long, the "splash brothers" took over from get go. In the first 12 minutes, PG Stephen Curry lit up the scoreboard with 20 points on 6-9 shooting from beyond the arc and 2 free throws. In the second quarter, the other splash brother, SG Klay Thompson, took over and scored 10 of his 16 first half points. The Warriors have two all stars this year with Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry, these two are also in the Foot Locker Three Point shootout. The Hawks, however have four all stars in Jeff Teague, Paul Millsap, Al Horford, and Kyle Korver who was recently selected to replace the injured Dwyane Wade. The Hawks also have a representative in the Three point shootout in Kyle Korver as well as in the Taco Bell skills challenge with Jeff Teague as their representative. Either teams record could go downhill after the all star game, because some players on the team could be angry they weren’t selected as an all star and try to improve their personal stats instead of helping the team. Another reason the teams records could go down is if the selected players are used to playing with the all star team instead of their normal…

Neither player is expected to return to the Cavs lineup for at least a month, while shooting guard J.R. Smith is also out with a right knee contusion. Although the Cavs are one of the best teams in the NBA when healthy, Blatt wouldn’t expound on how good the Cavs can be. “It stands to reason that when you add players like Iman Shumpert and Kyrie Irving to your lineup, guys that have played for us, that know us, that are the competitors they are and the talents that they are, that we should be better,” Blatt said. “How much? We’re going to see as we go along, but that’ll be a big positive for us obviously.”…
