It is estimated that there are between two and four thousand golden lancehead vipers on Snake Island, which equates to a snake, on average, every square meter. This means that, in some place on the island, one is never more than three feet from death.” Snake Island is highly populated with this deadly species of snake. Discovery Channel proclaimed,“The snakes have no predators on the island and their only source of food is migratory birds. These stories make Snake Island even more of an unexplainable place. Discovery Channel stated, “One story tells the tale of three hungry fishermen who were returning to the mainland from an unsuccessful fishing trip and were enticed by the banana trees on the island. While on the island, all of the fisherman were bitten by snakes and they rushed to get back to the boat. Several weeks later, two of their bodies were found in pools of their own blood. The third fisherman was never found. In the 1920s, a lighthouse keeper was assigned to the island with his wife and five year old daughter. The lighthouse was used to warn boats of the treacherous currents surrounding Snake Island. During one supply trip, the crew found the lighthouse abandoned and the door left open. Eventually the family was found, dead, along a path to the hillside. Legend has it that despite protective walls around the lighthouse, a snake had gotten in. To this day, many who visit the island claim to hear a young girl’s faint laughter floating in the wind.The last human inhabitants on the island tended to the lighthouse and left after the lighthouse was automated in the 1920’s.
