Golden Gate Bridge Research Paper

According to a recent article in The San Diego Union-Tribune, about one-thousand six-hundred individuals have jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge, the sad part is that only a handful lived to tell their story (Wilkens). Kevin Hines was one of the thirty-six survivors, and to this day he speaks to crowds about his experience. Kevin chose to jump from the bridge to escape his mental disorder of bipolar, but he claims he regretted it as soon as he left the edge. He could not stop himself after committing to the jump, he just must have faith that he would survive the two-hundred-and-twenty-foot jump. The Golden Gate Bridge is easily accessed and free, which is what has made it the top suicide place in the world ever since its opening in 1937 “5 Most Notorious Suicide Spots on Earth”. That is the only part of the bridge that is restricting, otherwise one can climb to jump at any other part. Even with this small portion being fenced off and security guards watching the bridge always, it still seems that there have been plenty of deaths still occurring. Thirty or so lives are continuing to be taken each year from jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge, this should be a sign that new safety measures should be installed. There needs to be safety barriers, and not just on some parts of the bridge. The entire Golden Gate Bridge needs to be gated off on the outside, to decrease jumps. To avoid increasing numbers, there needs to be a fence or some sort of safety barrier applied throughout the entire bridge, if that is done, then the bridge will no longer be assessable for those who want to take their life
