Golden Dancer Research Paper

Coated in gold and purple spots was Drummond’s first long shot, Golden Dancer. This rocking horse was all seven year old Drummond wished for. But since the price was so high, Golden Dancer was merely a trophy he never fathomed to win. His parents, however, worked hard to earn enough for the expense. Surprised and ecstatic, Drummond hopped into the saddle of his desired golden horse, which broke instantly. Rotten wood and poor sealing hid beneath the shimmering paint. Golden Dancer taught the lawyer an important lesson, “whenever you see something bright, shining, perfect-seeming … look behind the paint! And if it’s a lie- show it up for what it really is!” (Lawrence and Lee 110). Drummond learned not to judge appearance, but to judge substance.

Duke Ellington (1899-1974) is known to many Americans as the leader of a swing-era dance band as well as a writer of pop tunes. Some musicians and jazz fans also know him as a major composer--arranger. In fact, there are musicologists and journalists who consider Ellington to be America's greatest composer, which puts him in a league with Charles Ives and Aaron Copland. Though many jazz fans think of Ellington as a pianist too, few scholars have examined how unique and original his approach to the keyboard really was. Dr. Matthew J. Cooper of Eastern Oregon University wrote that "Ellington surely stands as one of the great jazz pianists, and his work is worthy of greater recognition than it has been accorded in the past" .…

Brady deceives the city residents from his weak and unstable self through his external greatness similar to how Golden Dancer deceived Henry Drummond from its fragileness through its external beauty.…

Juilliard is a highly prestigious school for music of all kinds. After researching this school, I have learned that academic scores are not important and that people of all ages can attend this school. The main importance for attending Juilliard is the audition where one will perform and be selected based on their talent. The school seems fantastic to me due to its extremely low acceptance rate which would offer closeness within the students attending the school. I prefer to go to schools with a smaller number of people because it offers more availability for instructers to get to know and help their students.…

Throughout this course I have gained more of an appreciation for artwork and the artists that create them. I have also gained an appreciation for the people that try to define what art is in general or more specifically what makes good art. We have read great thinkers and their philosophies on this, and the fact that even people of such great intelligence can disagree on the subject proves how challenging it can be. By reading the opinions of these great thinkers, and by discussing their thought with our class, I feel I am in a much better place as to define what makes good art myself. I define art as anything created by someone that inspires another to appreciation.…
