Goldcorp Environmental Effects

*Both the communities of Shoal Lake 40 and the land surrounding the Marlin Mine have been environmentally affected which also affects the health of locals. In the surrounding areas of the Marlin Mine, there have been many complaints by locals that the water is being contaminated by toxic metals (Zarsky and Stanley 2013). Research encourages that there is this heightened level of metal in the river close to the mine, which puts the ecosystem and human health in danger (North and Young 2013). There is also evidence that acid from the mine is being drained close by, which could be why there are elevated metals in the water, aluminum, copper, and manganese (Holden and Jacobson 2008). This shows that the government of Guatemala and Canada have not done anything to help the situation in the past or present. Goldcorp also does not have a good history with causing environmental effect, in the Toronto Stock Exchange that Goldcorp has the highest amounts of environmental fines among mining companies (Zarsky and Stanley 2013). Part of Goldcorp’s goal is to delivering long-term worth and great returns while operating safely and responsibly (Goldcorp 2017). Demonstrated from the points talked about above it can be seen that Goldcorp is not fulfilling this goal and doing the opposite in most cases. This shows that Goldcorp is not very involved with the communities they operate in and do not care about the effects the cause to locals and the environment. In Shoal Lake 40 since the building of the aqueduct, it did not only dispose Indigenous people of their land but also resources including the critical one of drinking water.
