To begin, Gold Star Park is home to two historical buildings of Wetumpka. The city’s first jail, “Old Calaboose,” can be found at the end of the park. The jail, which is a single cell, was built in 1620 and has been left untouched since it’s last use. Across the parking lot from “Old Calaboose” is The Fain Theater. It was moved to the foot of “Bibb’s Grave Bridge” next to Gold Star in 1925. Consequently, The Fain Theater closed permanently in 1975 and still sits waiting renovation. The majority of the history in the city of Wetumpka is centered around this unique location.

People crowd around the boat ramp to get close to the fireworks during Christmas on the Coosa, a local tradition that started in 1984. Christmas on the Coosa is a boat parade on the water where boats are lit up with light decorations of different Christmas character’s. At the end of Christmas on the Coosa, Santa Clause skis across the water with fireworks in the background. In 2009, Wetumpka’s first Mardi Gras Parade was held at Gold Star Park. During these events, the covered picnic area turns into a stage for live music, and local vendors sell hot dogs, cotton candy, and soda. Gold Star hosts events for Christmas on the Coosa, Fourth of July, Mardi Gras, Flag Day, and Arbor
