Going To College Should Be Based On Your Future Goals

Decent Essays
The decision to go to college should be based on your future goals; unfortunately this decision is sometimes forced upon us by our parents/guardians. For me I made my decision to go to college and work towards a MS in psychology and a CADC certificate. Upon receiving these credentials I would like to become a counselor for family’s who have a member with an addiction problem. The inspiration for my goal is due to my older brother who suffers with addiction to heroin. Growing up loving an addict is an entire different world. I developed such anger and hate towards my brother, due to not understand how he could do this to our family, also wondering how he could be so selfish. He would fill our mother’s head with empty promises of staying clean, …show more content…
He was in and out of rehab and jail so many times I stopped counting. Through dealing with this I realized I want to assist families in understanding and dealing with loving an addict. I want to show them how to understand, instead of developing anger and hate towards the addict. I don’t want families to believe the empty lies addicts will say just to have you sign them out of rehab early. I want to help them know that they did nothing wrong, and to assure them that under the addiction their love ones still exist and still loves them. Most of all I want them to know that they are not alone, that this may happen to anyone, and addiction has no preference. One of my brothers “stays” at rehab he met a girl and they have a son together. My nephew is another huge inspiration of my choice to go to college. I want to be a positive inspiration for him. I want to show him that through struggling with two parents who are addicts although horrible, it doesn’t need to define who he is and what his future could hold. I want to inspire him to go to college and make something of himself. I always knew I wanted to go to college, but these situations guided me to choose to become a family

It’s hard to believe that once upon time, Americans did not have the dreadful worries of finding a way to prepare for the financial necessities for college. Now, college is becoming more of a dream rather than a reality as high tuition rates becomes the number one reason why Americans are not advancing themselves into higher education. In some cases, there are college students who receive full-ride scholarships to the college they desire; however, the majority of those who do go to college do not obtain the same luck. Those students who do continue their education and go off to college find themselves short of financial aid, out-of-pocket cash, and even scholarships. This causes students to resort to taking out a student loan.…

Addiction is a disease that has spread into an epidemic. However, this book’s main focus is to ultimately help the struggling addict and their family overcome hardships and successfully find recovery. They will achieve this by using the “six principals of good recovery” that concentrate on both the process and the outcome perspective (Shumway & Kimball, 2012, p.3). The six principals include: hope, healthy coping skills, achievement and accomplishment, capacity for meaningful relationships, unique identity development, and reclamation of agency. The first of the six essentials on the road to recovery is hope, defined as “a reawakening after despair” and “to expect with greater confidence” (Shumway & Kimball, 2012, p.9)…

Because I came into this counseling program to better help those individuals who suffer from addiction, I want to be able to balance my personal experience with addiction and my long history of sponsorship with my newly acquired clinical mental health counseling skills. I realize that addiction can be an amazingly difficult problem to treat. I know that it takes a strong minded, experienced sponsor to help individuals find their way to sobriety. I also believe that recovery must go beyond just being sober, and a mental health counselor is in a better position to help with compounding issues that a person who suffers from addiction faces.
