American University is a well known college, a college that is known for promoting international understanding, faculty research, and the presence of world leaders on their campus. The idea of going to a University that is diverse and located in the most politically active areas is inspiring for a young writer to further their education in communications, journalism, and networking. I found the curriculum associated with the MA in Journalism and Public Affairs, and Broadcast Specialty new and flexible with the every changing technology, which will allow me to use my degree in a variety of ways, and in particular environmental journalism and broadcasting. It states “Stories well told influence change, inspire action, and transform. At American University School of Communication (SOC), we empower storytellers.” I want to become an empowering story letter through writing and broadcasting. The ability of inspiring readers and listeners through communicating my thoughts and research is empowering in itself. Educating people and producing passion is what I truly desire as a writer, especially on environmental and sustainable energy concerns. Writing articles that are about important issues and concerns, such as environmentalism, allows readers become educated. The readers become educated through the use of emotions, research, and experience of living that give people the opportunity to connect. Connecting allows people to find passion. I hope to gain further refinement in my writing and communication skills, but even more importantly gain the opportunities to cover stories and explore various technological possibilities that allow me to execute clear and concise communication. Broadcasting and Journalism can be a very challenging and competitive field, but I find it to be a very rewarding. I began writing for my entry level English class at Davis and Elkins College, and my love for writing blossomed, and now have been refined in upper level English classes. I then began writing for the school newspaper, Senator Media. The editor in chief gave me a free rein on topics of editorials. I wrote articles ranging from advice columns, professor spotlights, and news articles. I then began searching for environmental writing, so I can combine my love of writing and my degree in Sustainability Studies. Starting in May of 2015, I will begin writing articles for the Monongahela National Forestry Department. My position will include writing information ongoing projects that environmental agencies are performing in the Monongahela National Forest. I will have to do research, interviews, and photography in addition to my one page written articles. With the experience of producing published work, research papers, photography, and digital media I feel prepared to enter higher education in my dream field of study, in Journalism and Public Affairs, and Broadcasting. Being a full-time student with two jobs and a Resident Assistant positions at the college I feel that I have characteristics that are well suited for the journalism and broadcasting program. I am able to meet strict deadlines, multitask, handle stressful situations, comfortable with technology, great social skills, and
