The Silent Voices of People from the Endangered Redwood Forests According to Woody Harrelson’s letter to the editor of the San Francisco Examiner, there was a protest on September 14, 1997, of people cutting down many redwood trees that occurred in Northern California. Thousands of people came together during this time to stop the horrible destruction. The ending of The Leopard Tree by Tim Merriman and Lisa Brochu was heartbreaking, yet hopeful for the future. Although Daudi’s death cast a melancholy shadow over the joy of the book, the conclusion seemed rushed, and not fully developed compared to the rest of the book. I did like Rosa’s quote about Daudi being “home”, but I did not like Masozi’s and Ramla’s reaction to Daudi’s demise. They did not seem as depressed as they should have been.…

The beauty of the world and the universe is something that is hard to grasp for most people because of the magnitude of how riveting the beauty is. “In the Forest of Gombe” an essay written by Jane Goodall, describes how she was experiencing many different types of beauty from within the forest. The essay describes how we as humans look through many different lenses while we are searching for the meaning of the world. It truly is “our human responsibility” to better understand the awe aspiring world we live in; since, there is so much beauty and that there are so many unknowns that if we leave them unknown we will never grow as a civilization. As humans, we can see the world from many different “windows” and those lenses we see the world from…

This passage from Last Child in the Woods written in 2008 by Richard Louv, explores the relationship between people and nature with the growing influence of technology on society. Louv attempts to inform his audience, primarily older parents, about a growing divide between new generations and the natural world, through questioning why “so many people no longer consider the physical world worth watching.” Louv uses examples and appeals to the logic and emotion of the reader in order to get his point across. Louv begins the passage very intentionally with an example of an experiment where genetic technology is used to change the colors that appear on a butterfly’s wings. By beginning with this example, Louv appeals to the logic of the reader…

The burning of fossil fuels adding acidity to oceans and myriad carbon to the atmospheric layer to result in global warming. Elizabeth Kolbert interprets the idea of destruction through global warming in her article “The Forest and the Trees”. “Global warming is mostly seen as a threat to cold-loving species, and there are good reasons for this” (Kolbert 150). Mostly, global warming results in increased temperature which will cause the North and South Pole to melt.…

The Learning Tree, is an amazing work of art/film. A powerful film with multiple unexpected moments that really define and change and seriously effect the main character, Newt Winger. Besides having a powerful story and plot, the film was beautifully made with an unpredictable plot, with multiple thought provoking scenes with powerful and graphic scenario’s, I couldn't imagine this film any other way. The film is about a black teenager living in the 1920’s in Kansas. Newt is an intelligent unruffled young man who meets multiple racial prejudices, a very mature boy for his age he deals with the problems he faces with pride, having to deal with life changing choices that have the ability to effect his life forever.…

After reading W.S. Merwin’s “Unchopping a Tree”, the most devout Christian may stop and pause before taking an axe to an intricately perfect tree, to use it as a temporary giant ornament. But far more than the once a year ritual of picking out and chopping down the perfect Christmas tree or the chopping down of trees for winter fire wood, it is the tragic deforestation for profit and the destruction of animal habitat that the author is drawing our attention to. Merwin begins his story using the matter of fact voice of a foreman at a work site. His directions sound as though he is reading from an instruction manual on the steps required to unchop a tree. Between the steps of technical instruction, he…

Her curly blond hair flowed down to her shoulders as she went along, while her expressive hazel eyes gazed out from the center of her attractive face. She was a small creature, barely 5.4 in height and stature. Simply clad in a leather travel outfit, she hurried through the rain, as the sky continued to darken. She shivered at the thought of spending the night in these woods.…
