Going Bovine is a dark comedy written by Libra Bray. Cameron is 16 and has various social problems. He lives with his parents and his very popular sister. He deals with his problems by smoking pot and listening to unusual music. When he experiences a bad trip, his body starts going out of whack. When this starts to slowly progress into something uncontrollable, his parents take him to the doctor. He is then diagnosed with Mad Cow Disease and he has no cure for it and has a limited time to live. He is then hospitalized with another friendless classmate, a dwarf, who goes by the nickname Gonzo. Together, they go on a journey in search of cure. This journey is led by an angel that only Cameron can see and random items along the trip. Cameron, Gonzo, and the angel travel all over the country in search of the cure. On the way, they all encoutner strange things and experience many near-death experiences with monsters that only Gonzo and Cameron see. Toward the end, Cameron and Gonzo face their deepest fears and Cameron learns the true meaning of life.

The true meaning of life depends on the person asking. For Cameron, he ecounters various things that make him reflect on his life and what hes done with it. With every near-death experience, he becomes more and more grateful for his life. During a fight with one of Cameron’s monsters, an interpreter states that they will sing one last song. But he makes a very deep and meaningful statement, “These are hard times. The world hurts. We live in fear and forget to walk with hope. But hope has not forgotten you. So ask it to dinner” (428). Cameron realizes that the world isnt always how you would prefer it to be. Life can be a cruel thing sometimes, but with a little hope you can always get through
