Goffman 's Presentation Of Self

After reading the articles posted on the module, I started to realize how this will impact my future in the medical field. While reading I was thinking how much has changed in the last 12 years. My first job I ever had was in a grocery store. When I applied for that job I had to fill out a very short paper application. I had a quick interview and was offered the job on the spot. Things are way different now. The digital age has also taken over employment opportunities. Now when applying for a job, it’s usually online, and a resume is a must. Instead of one interview there are sometimes multiple interviews. With the economy the way it is, at times it is hard to find employment. Everyone seems to be gunning for a job, so that gives the employer more choices to choose from. Three reasons that Goffman’s presentation of self in the digital workplace is important to me, the fact that I am not just completing regionally for a job, but at times globally. Choosing the person to interview for this assignment was difficult at first, trying to determine which sport and how to contact that person. I first started with the Toledo Mud Hens, but didn’t receive any call backs. I also contacted the Lansing Lugnuts and the West Michigan White Caps and again no call backs. So I looked up minor league baseball teams and the name El Paso Chihuahuas caught my attention. Looking up their front office staff on their website I seen that Angela Olivas is the Director, Marketing and Communications for the team.…

My experiences, academic background and personality are three key aspects of my life that make the medical field a preference and a particularly suitable field for me. My interest in medicine was first sparked when I volunteered at CentraState Medical Center working with geriatric patients. To further explore this interest, I joined the First Aid Squad in my town. Riding on ambulances and volunteering at the squad provided much-needed insight into the field and taught me valuable skills, such as patient care and effective communication. After completing a four-month intensive EMT course and state exam, I can proudly say that I am now a New Jersey certified EMT.…

At many of the medical schools I interviewed at, I noticed an interesting trend. The nontraditional applicants outnumbered the traditional applicants, who’d taken the traditional college to medical school route. Given that the term nontraditional can be equivocal, I’d like to clarify that I use the term to refer to individuals who choose an unconventional path or took some time off during or after graduating college for personal reasons: to raise a family, discover themselves, improve their application et cetera. Intrigued by this, I spoke to several friends who’d interviewed at different schools about my observation; they’d also noticed a similar trend. While I may not have the data to prove this [most medical schools don’t keep track of the number of nontraditional students admitted] and my evidence is purely anecdotal, I believe the face of the typical medical school applicant may be changing.…
