The gods actions in The Odyssey affects Odysseus's odds returning home by either helping or sabotaging his journey home. In The Odyssey by Homer Odysseus struggles to get back home to Ithaca to see his wife and son. Odysseus and his ten year journey got stalled by cyclopses, pretty girls and even Poseidon. His men aren't much help causing even more problems in his journey home. Without the gods help Odysseus would have never returned home. Athena, Hermes and Aiolos are just three of the gods helping Odysseus on his journey home.
From the beginning, Athena tries to help Odysseus return to his home in Ithaca. Athena the Greek goddess of wisdom favored Odysseus, for Odysseus was a great hero among the Greeks. Aiolos gives Odysseus a bag made from the skin of a nine year old ox and put inside the blustering winds. Odysseus and his men sail for nine days until Ithaca is in sight but his men get greedy thinking the bag is full of treasure. When his men opened the bag the wind blows out and sends Odysseus and his men all the way back to the Isle of Aiolos. In addition when Odysseus returns to Aiolos's island Aiolos says "Surely we did everything we could to help you, that you might return safely to your native land, or anywhere else you wanted to go"(Homer 121)?
