There are many gods and goddesses in Greek mythology, but there are only 12 major Olympian gods. Greek mythology teaches the origin and the significance of them. All of the gods and goddesses have long pasts and large effects on other people. An example would be the goddess Artemis, who is part of the major Greek mythology family. Artemis, the goddess of hunt, had a strange birth, unique morals, and many companions and enemies. Artemis had two parents named Leto and Zeus, one sibling called Apollo, and was born on the island of Delos. The Titaness Leto was impregnated by Zeus which caused her to receive the wrath and jealousy of Hera. This led to Hera chasing the pregnant Leto across the land until she reached Delos, a floating island. Since …show more content…
One example would be Orion, her hunting companion. He was the only one that managed to capture Artemis’ heart. However, he was soon killed. Sources vary on who exactly killed him, but must say that it was an accident made by Artemis. One source says Orion died accidentally by either Artemis or Gaia as stated in this site, “It is believed that Orion was accidently killed either by Artemis herself or by Gaia, the primordial goddess of the Earth”(Artemis •). Another source says that Artemis accidently killed Orion because her brother tricked her supported by this quote, “The handsome giant Orion was a companion of the goddess but her jealous brother Apollo tricked her into killing him with a distant bow-shot” (Atsma). After Orion’s death, Artemis created him as a constellation in the sky to diminish her grief. Soon, Artemis encountered another man who was less courteous than Orion. Artemis met a man named Actaeon and he was a hunter. A source says that Actaeon saw Artemis and her nymphs bathing and she changed him into a stag. He then was devoured and killed by his own hounds. The other source says that Actaeon bragged that he was a better hunter than Artemis. To defend her honor and subdue her anger, she turned him into a stag and was killed by his dogs as supported by this evidence, “ The hunter Actaeon was turned into a stag by the goddess after he dared boast he was the greater hunter. People have different views and varying information for all the Greek gods and goddesses like Artemis. However, even if the gods do not exist, it still teaches people culture and history. An example is the different aspects of Artemis that show her entire life and her lifestyle. This can be said for all the other gods as well because they also have a long past that has influenced others. While there is an endless amount of gods from all cultures, Artemis is one of many that is a fierce independent
