Godard Opening Scene Analysis

Godard used a few difference camera angles and styles such as iris shot, close up, medium and wide shots, and camera movement. Godard also used many jump cuts and quick cuts to shift between scenes. For instance, in the beginning, he used jump and quick cuts of close up shots of Michel and a woman that let the audience have the illusion of Michel is having a very close relationship with with that woman. As Godard switch to a wide-angle shot, that’s where we know we have been fooled and they were strangers. It is a fast change in few second and different with the traditional film. The last scene makes me feel surprise and sad. I believe the last scene got quite amount of noise at the moment. Furthermore, the fashion style of Patricia in the film is very similar to the now fashion trend. The black and white horizontal stripe top with a black skirt is surprisingly not outdate at all. The end of the movie is the most impressed part for me. The ending was when I was surprised that Patricia actually turned Michel into the police and Michel gave up the opportunity to run away and chose to stay behind and eventually got shot. It was sad that they finally fall in love with each other when Michel passed away. In the few scenes, I think Patricia shown her love. For example, Patricia kissed Michel even after finding out he was responsible for killing a police. The long conversation between them inside the hotel room, they talk about what they think. Unfortunately, Patricia may not know her true heart back then. It might be the reason she still chose to turn Michel to the police at the end of the movie.
