A lot of women are oppressed by religion and the things that they are not allowed to do. The first way is that men are superior and in this case, closer to God also. Many of the myths that are told aren’t directly in the Bible. The myths are oral traditional stories told within the community. The …show more content…
An example of this is the poem written by Kaylin Haught. This poem is called, “God Says Yes to Me” and it is the evidence that God acknowledges women and that they should be themselves. In this poem, Haught ask God many questions and the answer is Yes every time. One thing I noticed is that the poem states, “She said Yes” (Haught 651). This is a way of showing that God doesn’t have to be masculine and God gives women a feeling of self-worth. God says yes and agrees to whatever is asked, this is where the empowerment of value to a woman life comes from. This poem shows me that God favors women and she took the masculinity out of it to prove it. She related to God as a she and in a positive way. When each answer is Yes this gives women power and self-esteem compared to other ways that had been taught. In previous text it talks about God is Father and many other masculine terms used that described God, but also was in favor of men and being superior. I do not agree with the fact that God should be looked at as a women, but it helped women gain power. I refer to God as the Father and other masculine terms, but I do not feel as inferior as the women in this book talk about. I can agree with Haught in a way that God still favors us, just not in the way of referring to God as a woman. I believe the fact that women were struggling with rights made them feel like religion was in favor of them being inferior. Religion facts have not change, just the way the readers interpret it. Women have come up with their own ways to reach out to religion and depend on religion with feeling oppressed or inferior. This is my favorite section, but women gain power and
