The purpose of The DARE Program is to provide preventative education to school students in hopes to lower the amount of school students from using and selling drugs in schools. The goals of the DARE Program were to implement the preventative education instead of sentencing them to jail time for drug crimes that weren’t severe. The program was established in 1983 by Chief Office Daryl Gates in Los Angeles (Dare.org, 2017).

There are two sides to this program in terms of its success rate. First, when the program began, the success rate was extremely successful. From the early 1980’s to the 1990’s, the program showed signs of helping the use of drugs in schools decreased dramatically (Dare.org, 2017). Then by 2000, the Department of Education concluded an audit of The DARE Program drug education programs and only evidenced-based programs would be eligible for funding from the Department of Education’s drug education budget and The DARE Program did not make the cut. So, the program had its moments of success and downfalls. Today, DARE focuses on many education programs that has a successful approval rate from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (Dare.org, 2017). The developers say it’s not an anti-drug program, but is more focus on decision-making tactics, such as being honest and safe and responsible. But, it’s been demonstrated in a handful of studies to reduce the risk of drug abuse. So, with this tweak in the program, the success rate has seen its success rate increase
