They also believe that covering homosexual safe-sex techniques will inspire people to be gay. Those people have extremely misguided information, as research has proven time and time again that there is no correlation between comprehensive sex education and an increase in sexual activity. The problem with this ideology is that the goals of comprehensive sex education and abstinence-only education do not share a common goal. Abstinence only education even goes as far as to discourage people from masturbating. While it is absolutely true that abstaining from sex is the only 100% sure way to be completely safe of sex-related ailments, it is not realistic or even ideal to ask people not to have sex, even for safety purposes. Sex ed is meant to encourage safe sex practices, whereas abstinence-only education is meant to shame people into not engaging in any sexual acts at all. Dr. Beh says that “...there is actually no correlation to abstinence only education and lowered rates of sex among teens. On the contrary, comprehensive sex education empowers minors to act responsibly and in their best self-interest.” States that actually teach people to use protection and have access to said methods of protection have less rates of STIs and unwanted pregnancy. The best means of making sure adolescents seek safe-sex resources is by keeping an open mind and factual help from parents. If any reform is to be made at all, it has to start at home. Parents should begin to teach safe sex to their kids, reminding them to always use protection, to get tested every time they have a new partner and even that getting tested is romantic, and the importance of consent within any and all sexual
